CIY: Bold Flower Cluster Necklaces

When I was looking at the picture Megan sent to me, it was a bit hard to see the necklaces since the picture was from someone’s wedding, and not an actual retail store. From what I could see, I knew the necklace was something I could replicate.

We headed on over to my home-away-from-home, Joann’s, to get all of the supplies to make her bridesmaids’ jewelry.  We walked all of the aisles looking for fabric and touching everything! Well, maybe I was the only one touching everything, but that’s how I find what I need! Megan finally decided on the fabric for her flowers. She went with cream fabric and cream fabric with a hint of pink (her bridesmaid dresses are light pink).

For the beads, she wanted to use silver accents along with turquoise. We searched the bead section for the perfect beads to add to her necklaces. We found these amazing turquoise bead covered beads! They were just the pop of color she was looking for. To find beads that were big enough (and in a silver finish) we headed over to the button aisle. There was obviously more touching on my part trying to find the right buttons that had a vintage weathered feel to them.  We found the perfect buttons!

So, here’s how I made all of the flowers and beads for the necklaces:

– For the medium and small rosette’s I took strips of fabric that were about an inch and a half wide and a yard long (1/2 a yard for the smaller rosettes). I folded the fabric in half and rolled it up until I had about a 1/4  inch of fabric rolled. I then started twisting my fabric around my center, moving around my necklace. When I had about an inch of fabric left, I added hot glue to it and glued it to the bottom of the flower.

– For the large ruffley flowers, I took a piece of fabric about 2 1/2 inches wide and a yard and a half long and folded it in half. I took my scissors and started cutting slits in the fabric along the folded end about a half an inch apart. I did this to the entire strip of fabric. I took the end of my fabric and rolled it tight until it was about 1/4 inch thick. Then, I started loosely wrapping the rest of my fabric. When I had about an inch of fabric left, I added hot glue to it and glued it to the bottom of the flower.

– To make the beads, I hot glued my buttons (or beads) to a piece of felt. I then glued the beads I wanted all around it in a circle. I cut around the felt to create my “beads”.

On the backs of my small “beads” and small flowers, I glued a bent piece of jewelry wire. This was to attach the necklace ribbon. I then arranged all of my beads on a piece of felt. When I was happy with the design, I began gluing everything to my felt. When the glue was dry I cut around my beads. I then tied strips of fabric I had ripped to the wire on my small beads and flowers.

And there you have it, fabric beaded necklaces!
