Trader Joe’s Bag Challenge: Project 2 – Place Mat

You are probably thinking, “How in the heck is she going to make a place mat out of paper?”  Umm…with contact paper, obviously.  I am kind of obsessed these days with One Kings Lane.  They love to send me emails with all of their new vintage finds…dangerous!

As I scanned the kitchen accessories (and daydreamed about a home filled with all of these lovely items) I came across these burlap place mat with sweet little sayings on them.  Of course, I instantly thought a trusty Trader Joe’s bag would be a nice alternative to the burlap.  You can use these in your kitchen, on a romantic picnic in the park, or as a special detail at a vintage wedding.

{Step 1}:  Cut your Trader Joe’s bag starting at the top left hand corner.  Work your way down the side of your bag.  When you get to the bottom, turn and continue cutting.

{Step 2}: Keep cutting all the way around your bag so it opens up like the below picture.

{Step 3}: Cut along the middle seam (see below).  You will now have two place mats. Measure your place mats so they are both 18in long.  Cut off any excess paper and clean up the edges if need be.

{Step 4}: Gently tear the handles from the bag.  They should come off without ripping your paper.

{Step 5}: Take your sticker letters and place them on the lower right hand side of your place mat.  Choose whatever saying you want. :)  I just eye-balled these, you can use a ruler to make sure your letters are straight.

{Step 6}: Unroll your contact paper so there is enough to fit your place mat.  Tear off the paper backing from your contact paper (this will expose the sticky side of the contact paper).  Put your place mat on your contact paper with the back against the contact paper.  Cut your contact paper about a half-inch away from your place mat.  Then, place contact paper on the side that has wording and cut.

{Step 7}: Both sides of your place mat are now covered and protected.  Trim all of the way around your place mat as close to the paper as you can get without cutting it.
