How to Make a Plant Stand Out of a Tomato Cage

DIYTomatoCagePlantStand_2

A couple of months back I was out and about doing some alley trolling since it felt like it had been forever since I found an alley treasure.  My initial reason for poking around other people’s garbage was to see if I could get lucky and find some used Little Tikes pieces. These plastic toys are great since they can be washed up and are basically good as new!

As I made my way up and down alley after ally, I didn’t find anything good.  Then, at the end of one alley, I saw a stack of probably 20 tomato cages.  As I drove passed them, I remembered seeing a really cool tall wire plant stand on Pinterest.  I immediately threw my car in reverse and tossed 3 of them in my trunk!  Looking back I should have taken more–even though Mike would’ve killed me!

This transformation was really pretty easy.  All I did was trim off the top 3 wires on each cage.  Then, I decided on the height I wanted.  I made all three of my cages different heights for a staggered effect.  Once all of my cages where cut down to the sizes I wanted, I hit them with a couple of coats of matte  black spray paint.  I measured the top of each plant stand to get the width.  I made sure when I bought my pots they were a little bit smaller than the hole.  If the pots are the same size they’ll fall right thru! I also spray painted these black.  After everything was painted, I added some dirt and popped in some inpatients (which are doing great!!).

My flowers have really filled in over the past few months!  I’m pretty pumped to transition these plant stands for Fall.  I plan on grabbing mums and stacking pumpkins around the base! I can’t wait!

Here’s a picture of my inspiration. Source.  They are charging $85-$110 for these.  Not a bad hack if you ask me!
